At Europe's lively open-air markets and bazaars, bargaining for merchandise is the accepted and expected method of setting a price. Whether you are looking for door-knockers or hand-knitted sweaters, seize the chance to bargain like a native. It's the only way to find a compromise between the wishful thinking of the seller and the souvenir lust of the tourist.

  14. CELEBRITY TRAVELER Steven Raichlen: Paris fires the flames for griller

For his latest book, "Planet Barbecue" (Workman Publishing, $35), master griller Steven Raichlen traveled to 60 countries to see for himself how grilling is done in places such as South Korea, Uruguay and South Africa. With his firsthand knowledge, he put together more than 300 barbecue recipes that are eclectic yet basic enough for the average home griller to follow. Raichlen also is the host of PBS' "Primal Grill" and previously hosted "Barbecue University at the Greenbrier." The 57-year-old chef describes his life as spending "half the year in Miami, half the year in Martha's Vineyard and half the year on airplanes. No wonder I'm so tired."
