LONDON — Britain scrambled fighter jets Friday to intercept a commercial airliner carrying more than 300 people from Pakistan, diverting it to an isolated runway at an airport on the outskirts of London and arresting two British passengers who allegedly threatened to destroy the plane.

  5. On Benghazi, Obama vs. Republicans again

Maybe because President Obama said so many other things in his speech Thursday -- about drones, Guantanamo and a “new phase” in the war against terrorism -- a reference to Benghazi didn’t attract much attention. But, at the risk of over-interpretation, it struck me as another attempt by the president to counter the Republican claim that he refused to recognize Benghazi as a terrorist attack.

  13. A new response in the war on terror

Better late than never, President Obama has moved to establish more rigorous standards for the targeted killings of Americans and foreigners alike away from a battlefield. The need for what he called "strong oversight of all lethal action" was one theme of the president's address Thursday at National Defense University. Another, equally overdue, was his renewed determination to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay and expedite the repatriation of dozens of inmates who have languished there despite being cleared for release.
