  5. When Obama says, 'Force alone cannot make us safe'

One of the most important parts of President Obama's landmark speech on May 23 at the National Defense University is receiving little attention. It is his call for "a strategy that reduces the wellspring of extremism," his recognition that extremism is fed, in part, by "underlying grievances and conflicts," which need to be accurately understood and addressed as an integral part of U.S. security policy. It is a welcome articulation from a president who deserves credit for beginning to formulate a long-term vision for alleviating terrorist threats.

"Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.” That may sound like a clique of conspiracy theorists or the title of a summer B movie, but it's actually an alliance of human rights groups raising legal and ethical concerns about people's willingness to cede life-and-death decisions to computers.

  9. At informal Obama-Xi summit, White House hopes for a connection

WASHINGTON — Two years ago, President Obama hosted China's president, Hu Jintao, in a fastidiously choreographed White House summit involving an honor guard, a state dinner and a 21-gun salute. In meetings, officials spent more time reading from scripts than discussing touchy topics of mutual concern.
