1. Spectacular 1,000-year-old tomb with 80 burials uncovered in Peru

Belgian archaeologists working at the ancient site of Pachacamac in Peru have uncovered a spectacular 1,000-year-old tomb containing more than 80 burials, many of them infants and children. The 60-foot-long, oval chamber has remarkably escaped the extensive looting that has occurred at the site and appears to be virtually intact, according to archaeologist Peter Eeckhout of the Free University of Brussels, which announced the find on its <a href="http://www.ulb.ac.be/ulb/presentation/index.html" target="_blank">website (link in French).

  12. Around the world in 23 days

Phileas Fogg went around the world in 80 days. I did it in 23. And I bet I visited more amazing sites than he — India's Taj Mahal, Easter Island, Tibet, Cambodia's Angkor Wat, the African plains, to name a few — all without having to endure the tramp steamers, bone-jarring trains and elephants that Fogg used in 1872. I traveled by private jet. The price of a seat, and all that went with it, was $64,950.
