3. Hoofing it through Myanmar's mountains

Hti Tain Monastery, Myanmar — Our horses arrived in a cloud of dust, clattering on the gravel road. Their manes were a little shabby, their saddles worn, but they looked sturdy and lively, capable of the two-day trek that would take me and my sons, Dow, 8, and Orly, 5, out of Kalaw, Myanmar, and into the pale mauve mountains above.

  9. Carpet: It's in the bag

Rugs have been appearing on shoulders and wrists and backs, carried as colorful, one-of-a-kind purses and handbags. These modern carpetbags use kilim (flat weave), dhurries (hand-woven, vegetable-dyed cotton), suzani (embroidered cotton or silk) and other, often vintage, global textiles to create truly distinctive purses. Each one tells a story, which is part of the charm.
This post has a correction. See bottom of article for details.

  17. Homegrown lemon grass: two varieties of a singular taste

It’s not a particularly attractive phase for the plants, which look like overgrown weeds on their last legs. Fortunately the plants' useful life isn't over; the stage is simply another turn of the wheel, the clumps of lemon grass scattering seeds to expand their reach.

  23. Bring my son, and everyone else's, home from Afghanistan

My soldier son called last month to wish his mother and me a happy Thanksgiving. My iPhone buzzed and there he was, sitting in a gun tower, his smiling face bathed in gauzy infrared light, an M249 machine gun propped at the ready behind him. For security reasons, we didn't talk about his location. It could've been Afghanistan, Iraq or Kuwait. He's spent the better part of this year serving in all three.
