1. The Seven Wonders of the World, 2.0

Times Staff Writer
The world's most wondrous wonder is actually the computer. Millions of people from across the globe joined in what was essentially a huge publicity stunt, voting via the Internet to choose a new list of the Seven Wonders of the World, announced Saturday....

3. 'The Edge of Heaven'

Near the beginning of Fatih Akin’s captivating “The Edge of Heaven,” a lonely widower (Tuncel Kurtiz) trolls Bremen, Germany's red-light district before settling on a middle-aged prostitute called Jessie (Nursel Köse). Kurtiz's Ali is Turkish but raised his now-grown son in Germany. Jessie, whose real name is Yeter, has a college-aged daughter back home in Istanbul to whom she sends money for school. Both are alone and alienated from their children. After learning that Yeter is Turkish, Ali proposes an arrangement he thinks will suit them -- he'll pay her what she makes at the brothel if she'll come live with him.

5. Review: Kebabs are just the beginning at Sako's Mediterranean Cuisine

SPICE-INFUSED and presented with several sauces, the iskender kebabat Sako's Mediterranean Cuisine, a Turkish restaurant in Reseda, sent me straight back to Istanbul's vibrant Beyoglu district, where the aroma of meat-scented smoke wafts through ancient cobblestone streets. Just off the tony boulevard Istiklal Caddesi, the area is packed with dozens of cafes and rotisserie specialists doling out the country's iconic doner kebab -- slices of meat stacked on a big skewer (similar to the Greek gyro and Arab shawarma) -- and its fancier cousin, the iskender kebab (a plated version).

7. Iraqis arrive in Turkey for talks

Special to The Times
The Turkish government cautioned Thursday that it alone would decide whether to launch a major assault into northern Iraq to crush Kurdish rebels, striking a defiant note as a high-ranking Iraqi delegation arrived in Ankara and U.S. ambassador to Iraq...

9. Lost in Byzantium

The Byzantine Empire fell in 1453. But you wouldn't know it in Russia, where Vladimir V. Putin has been behaving as though the 15th century never ended, as though he is the direct descendant of the Byzantine kings and Moscow remains the "Third Rome" it...

11. Book with a buried treasure

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
The book cost $2 million at auction, but large sections are unreadable. Some of its 348 pages are torn or missing and others are covered with sprawling purple patches of mildew. Sooty edges and water stains indicate a close escape from a fire. "This...

13. Developing an artistic flair in the United Arab Emirates

IT'S A quiet Sunday morning in this city of cacophonous ambition. Construction has yet to hit a deafening pitch, and traffic is still moving. But, as the temperature rises, all sorts of art activity bubbles up in the historic Bastakiya district, a low-lying island of traditional Arabian houses in a sea of modern high-rises.

17. Turkish pride and The Times

We've had plenty of cause for celebration lately that we are not bound by Article 301 of the Turkish penal code (which specifies a six-month-to-three year prison sentence for insulting "being a Turk, the Republic or Turkish Grand National Assembly") or...

23. Review: Isabel Bayrakdarian and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra

Once they've hit the big time, opera stars have often used their platforms to explore and promote their national heritages. Enrico Caruso belted Neapolitan songs, Jussi Björling sang Swedish songs, Jessye Norman performed spirituals, Plácido Domingo championed zarzuelas -- and so on.
