  1. Stay cool in Ho Chi Minh City's cafe oases

My husband, Robin, son Kai and I lived in Vietnam for a little more than two years. At first we found all the sounds of Ho Chi Minh City charming. Then annoying, as motorcycle engines, bus horns, loud karaoke music and construction noise erupted endlessly.

Lions, tigers, bears and a haunted house in Vietnam?
Lions, tigers, bears and a haunted house in Vietnam? It's not a fairy tale, and the only missing ingredient is a voice exclaiming, "Oh, my!" Lac Canh Dai Nam Van Hien is a $219-million amusement park that began construction in 1999 and opened Sept. 11,...

  7. Vietnam's Phu Quoc island slowly opening up to the world

During the four years I lived in Hanoi, where I was The Times' bureau chief in the late 1990s, I did a pretty good job of getting around Vietnam and exploring new places, from Can Tho in the southern Mekong Delta to Sapa on the northern border with China. But I missed Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island. So did most people. Unless you were a backpacker looking for a cheap beach hotel, there wasn't much reason to go.

  9. Myanmar's dazzling shrines to Buddha

As I sat on a high ledge of the 734-year-old Mingalarzedi Temple, looking out over the hundreds of ancient temples around Bagan, I wondered how long it would take a visitor to see them all. Archaeologists say there once were about 5,000 temples, but earthquakes, decay and long-ago looters have destroyed more than half of them. Still, that's a lot of temples to explore in this 16-square-mile archaeological treasure trove.
