Vargas, who is serving his first year as state senator for the 40th district including portions of San Diego and Riverside counties and all of Imperial County, said Thursday that he hasn’t heard of anyone else running for the Congressional seat.
Rep. Bob Filner, D-Chula Vista, filed papers earlier this week indicating he was in the running for the San Diego mayor seat, which will be up for election next year.
Vargas said that because Filner is not running for Congress, it’s a natural progression for the person representing the area in the state Senate to move up to the Congressional seat.
He said he thinks he has a good chance in the running. Nobody else has really put forth their interest in the position, and he’s been a long-time representative of the San Diego area.
He’s also gotten to know the Imperial Valley well, making connections that scored him a big win from the area last year, he said.
Vargas has previously served as state assemblyman for a portion of the San Diego area from 2000 to 2006 and on the San Diego City Council from 1993 to 2000. He was elected last November for the state Senate seat.
