J.C. Penney has stopped selling a t-shirt for little girls after shoppers expressed outrage over the "sexist" design.
The message splattered across the white t-shirt read "I'm too pretty to do homework, so my brother has to do it for me". The $9.99 t-shirt, marked down from $16.99, was made for girls ages 7 to 16 and was only sold on its website. Ironically, the shirt was made by a brand called Self Esteem.
If the shirt wasn't offensive enough the marketing copy on the side read, "Who has time for homework when there's a new Justin Bieber album out? She'll love this tee that's just as cute and sassy as she is."
After seeing the shirt on the retailer's website Tuesday, New York resident Lauren Todd started a petition on the website Change.org, asking the retailer to pull the shirt.
A day later, Penney's removed the item and issued the following statement:
"J.C. Penney is committed to being America's destination for great style and great value for the whole family. We agree that the 'Too pretty' t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize to our customers and are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect."
Do you think the t-shirt is cute or offensive?
