Some call it art, I just call it plain old creepy. A 65-year-old Michigan State art professor, Danny Guthrie, likes to take pictures of himself with former and current students, who are typically 40 years his junior.
Oh and they're not just cute snapshots for him to scrapbook later, no most of the time he's naked and the students pretty much are too. In the different poses he's caressing the students both men and women.
Guthrie has been part of MSU's faculty for 13 years and this recently surfaced, thanks to a student newspaper. The State News did an expose about the professor recruiting models.
The paper ran a piece in October about 'notorious' rumors that Guthrie takes nude photographs with his students. The paper fired back with several editorials debating whether or not the photographs in question were misogynistic, exploitative, or even pornographic.
Guthrie fired back with a statement on his website saying his interest in making these photographs was both 'political and personal,' and mean to explore 'my loss of youth and impending doom.'
He wrote: 'Certainly subject matter such as this is politically charged. My intent is to acknowledge these various traditions and debates, twisting and blurring the codes of classical aesthetics, contemporary rhetorically motivated art, and even erotica.
'The images do not mean I have this or that fantasy about a particular individual or situation, but they do explore emotions that I, and I assume most others, have felt.'
Michigan State's interim vice president of university relations told USA Today that Guthrie and his photographs had been examined, and there were no issues.
'Sometimes art, and the means by which it is expressed, evokes strong responses. MSU's main concern is to maintain the integrity of the teaching and learning environment.
'Professor Guthrie does not recruit students currently enrolled in his classes to model for photographs. All models who choose to participate do so on a voluntary basis.
'Volunteers determine the extent of their participation and approve the final photographs.'
Do you think MSU should have punished Guthrie? Is this art or an old man taking advantage of students?
