SAN DIEGO- Some San Diegans are celebrating Earth Day by helping to fight hunger.
Wednesday, Vons grocery store handed out a reusable shopping bag to every customer who donated a can of food to the San Diego Food Bank.
"We saw Earth Day as an opportunity not just to promote environmental conservation but also to alleviate hunger. And the way the economy is there are more and more people going to the food banks for assistance," Vons spokesman Carlos Illingworth said.
Five Vons grocery stores in the San Diego area participated in the food drive. Organizers were prepared to hand out 5,000 bags to generous customers.
"We're hoping for two things. We are hoping to help Vons with environmental protection, as well as feeding hungry people in San Diego."
Eighth graders from St. Charles Academy were among the first to donate. Their teacher, Mr. Hogan, made the Earth Day Food Drive a class field trip.
