Gayle Anderson was live in Arcadia for "SANTA ANITA PARK OPENS". Santa Anita Park will open its gates for its traditional winter/spring meeting on Sunday, December 26th. This historic racing venue first opened on December 25, 1934 and is the longest running major sports enterprise in California. First post time on opening day is 12 noon.
From Eddie Arcaro and Johnny Longden to Bill Shoemaker and Laffit Pincay Jr., the world's greatest jockeys have called Santa Anita Park "home". This year's opener features the world's finest reinsmen, who are set to converge on Arcadia. Rafael Bejarano, Garrett Gomez, Joel Rosario and Hall of Famer Mike Smith headline an extensive "A" List jockeys' colony that will also include Tyler Baze, Brice Blanc, Victor Espinoza, David Flores, Martin Garcia, Corey Nakatani, Martin Pedroza, Joe Talamo, Alonso Quinonez, Chantal Sutherland, Patrick Valenzuela and others. In addition, Santa Anita Park unveils its all-new, natural dirt surface. Santa Anita's main track had been comprised of synthetic material from September of 2007 through Oct. 11, when construction began on the new surface.
Beginning December 26th, Santa Anita will offer live racing updates (changes, results, payouts, etc), photos, press releases and links to interviews via Facebook and Twitter as part of Santa Anita Park's new social media effort that includes YouTube Flip Cam interviews, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, Tycoon Mobile, daily Santa Anita blogs, email blasts, online contests and conventional press releases that include photos. These new social media efforts provide limitless opportunities to reach out to a younger, more wide-ranging demographic and make it easier to stay up-to-date with the activities at Santa Anita Park.
The opening of Santa Anita Park for the winter provides an overall economic impact to the region and local businesses. Santa Anita Park employs more people on a seasonal basis than just about anyone else in this region with an average of 1,000 to 1,200 people working per day. In addition, big crowds are expected for opening day, which bodes well for hotels, bars, restaurants and other service-oriented businesses in the area. The city of Arcadia benefits directly by increased room occupancy, sales tax revenues and from the revenues from employees and fans who shop in the area.
Admissions are sold at all gates. Three separate admission levels allow Santa Anita guests to select the Park access that best fits their needs.
