A professor at University of California, Davis hopes to bring back a popular class teaching students how to create applications for smart phones.
It's a growing industry with more than 100,000 apps available on the iPhone alone, and app stores generated more than $4.2 billion in revenue last year, according Gartner Inc.
Professor Ken Joy and app developer Serban Porumbescu helped expose UCD students to the app industry with a how-to class last fall. The class filled quickly after word got out among students on Twitter.
"Programming these devices, or even the Apple iPad, will be one of the things you'd like to teach students here," says Professor Joy.
A couple of the students even developed an app for UCD, which helps others find classes and track campus busses in real time.
