VALLEJO—A Fairfield man has been sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for killing a city councilman.
Solano County Superior Court Judge Robert Bowers on Monday also fined 33-year-old Henry Don Williams $10,000 and ordered him to pay $20,000 in restitution to the state, city of Fairfield and family of Councilman Matt Garcia.
Prosecutors say Garcia was killed outside a friend's home in Cordelia when Williams and Gene Combs mistook him for a drug dealer who reneged on a $50 drug deal.
The 46-year-old Combs was found guilty of second-degree murder in June. His attorney has requested that Combs' sentencing date be delayed as he prepares a motion seeking a new trial.
The sentencing comes just days before a citywide effort to pull more guns off the street. It's being coordinated by the Garcia family, they know one less gun won't bring Matt back, but maybe it will stop another funeral from happening.
Last year the family collected more than 100 unwanted guns by offering gift cards. The thought is, if you take away the weapons, you'll stop other senseless deaths.
The gun buy back program is this Saturday, September 4th from 10am to 3pm at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Fairfield. You can turn your weapons in, no questions asked.
