DAY TWO- Saturday, June 4
My first stop today was to check out all things river-related. The “Jet Ski Racing: The Xtreme RiverCross Challenge” was one of my first river events to watch and it was a great way to start off my exciting festivities of the day. Onlookers lined the sides of the Arkansas River to get a chance to watch jet skiers zoom down the river at high speeds. Jet skiers thrilled the crowd as they looped through buoys and other obstacles. The heat of the day was making me want to join in on the jet ski fun as well.
Other exciting activities taking place on the river were the river rides. Riverfest attendees were able to spend some time enjoying the river with their choice of riding paddle boats, canoes, or kayaks. The rides have been taking place between the Douglas Street Bridge and 2nd street, which offers a large area for people to relax and glide along the river.
After watching the river festivities, I headed over to the Classic Rock Concert at the Kansas Star Music Park. This park has a wide open field where people can choose whether they wish to sit up close to the stage or back on the grassy hills. I chose to spread my beach towel right in the middle, which had a great view.
I watched the first half of the concert which was full of different types of rock music, including some classic, alternative, southern, and hard rock. All age ranges, from toddlers to senior citizens, came out to enjoy this large variety of rock music from several different rock bands. One of the songs that got the largest response from the crowd was Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” sung by the band Shyner.
My last event that I got to see was the Bicycle X-Change Criterium. This event drew in a large crowd as bicyclists raced down the streets of downtown Wichita. I was amazed at how fast these bicyclists were taking the corners of the street as they went by. I know that if I tried to take a corner as fast as they were taking them I would definitely fly off my bicycle.
Tomorrow I will be spending some time at the Riverfest Zipline and the Farmers Insurance Group Tethered Hot Air Balloon Ride. If I’m feeling adventurous, I just might try one of the rides myself!
