WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal regulators and a number of U.S. retailers are urging parents to stop using crib tents and play yard tents made by Tots in Mind Inc. due to a strangulation risk. A voluntary recall of the products went out Wednesday.
Tots in Mind recalled the tents in 2010 following the death of a two-year old boy who died in 2008 after getting trapped between the frame and the metal rod at the base of the tent. Another child had a catastrophic brain injury in 2007 when the tent on his crib inverted and the product's broken rod trapped him by the neck.
The company offered a repair kit for the tent at the time but has since gone out of business and the kit is no longer available.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday that five major U.S. retailers are voluntarily recalling the tents and offering refunds or store credit.
The consumer safety commission said it is aware of 27 tent failures, which includes the fatality and serious injury, between January 1997 and April 2012.
Those participating in the recall include Amazon.com, Burlington Coat Factory, Toys R Us and Babies R Us, Walmart and Bed Bath & Beyond, which also sold it through the website Buy Buy Baby.
The recalled products were sold for between $60 and $85.
Consumers should contact the store where the item was purchased. The recall includes various models of about 330,000 crib or play yard tents.
Federal regulators urged parents and caregivers to stop using the crib tents and play yard tents immediately and not to attempt to repair the products.
The tents have a label with the Tots In Mind logo, several inches wide and long, located on the non-mesh portion near the top of the tent.
The tents included are: Portable Playard Tent, Original Cozy Crib Tent, Cozy Crib Tent II, Crib Tent for Convertible Cribs, Portable Playard Tent Plus Cabana Kit. There are no model names or numbers on the tents.
The commission put photos on its website of the tents to help consumers identify the product.
