A 35-yard pass play from Norton to Terry Leigh and two offside penalties by Loyola on the ensuing drive helped Hart run out the clock, but not before Herrington had flashbacks of his team's 25-24 loss to No. 4 Westlake Village Westlake this season.
In that game, Westlake scored a touchdown and two-point conversion in the final minute to win.
"There were some nervy coaches over there," Herrington said.
Loyola scored on the opening possession, going 72 yards in eight plays, but mustered little after that. Hart, meanwhile, moved the ball impressively against a Loyola defense that had allowed only 24 points in its previous four games.
Norton completed 14 of 24 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Howell carried 24 times for 111 yards and also had three catches for 16 yards and a touchdown. Receiver Kevin Ciccione had seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.
For Loyola, Deke completed 10 of 22 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an interception.
La Serna 55, Workman 0
Ricky Beltran rushed for two touchdowns to lead La Serna (5-0) to a 42-0 halftime lead. Workman is 0-5.
Ribet Academy 17, Sage Hill 12
Free safety Brett James had two interceptions and kicked a 44-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Ribet Academy (3-2). Strong safety Joseph Marcos intercepted a pass for the Frogs on the Ribet Academy 12-yard line with less than one minute left to hold off the Lightning (1-4).
San Clemente 44, Foothill 21
Cheyne Verhagen set a school record and the Tritons took advantage of five turnovers to hand the Knights their first loss of the season at Tustin High.
Verhagen, a senior, scored two touchdowns, breaking the school record for career touchdowns with 34. James Allen scored 33 touchdowns from 1997-99.
Verhagen, who carried 18 times for 81 yards, set the record on a 17-yard draw play in the third quarter that gave San Clemente (3-2) a 37-3 lead.
Four of Foothill's turnovers led to points for the Tritons (3-2), including a 79-yard interception return by John Jay Verhagen.
Triton quarterback Cole Bergquist completed 20 of 29 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. Receiver Steve Melton caught 11 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
Casey Daniels completed 17 of 31 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for Foothill (4-1).
