Loyola 31, Mater Dei 28 (2 OT)
Thomas Weber kicked a 37-yard field goal in the second overtime Saturday night to lift Los Angeles Loyola to victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei at Santa Ana Stadium.
After trading touchdowns on their first alternate possessions in overtime, the Monarchs were stopped short on fourth and two at the 17 yard line. Weber, who missed an extra point and field goals of 43 and 51 yards, then kicked the game winner four plays later for the Cubs (4-3, 1-1).
Mater Dei (3-4, 1-1) twice fumbled inside Loyola's five yard line. The first turnover came on the opening drive of the game, and second came with the Monarchs driving for the go-ahead touchdown with 3:02 remaining in the game.
Mistakes also hurt Loyola, particularly a roughing-the-passer penalty on a failed fake punt, which resulted in a first down. Mater Dei then went on to score on a 1-yard run by Justin Guzman to cut Loyola's lead to 13-7 with 1:44 left in the first half.
Mater Dei quarterback Jason Forcier, who rushed for 106 of his 181 yards in the fourth quarter, scored on a nine yard run with 5:57 left in the game to tie the score at 21.
