9. At Monterey's Restaurant 1833, updated comfort food and ghosts

There is absolutely no reason for Restaurant 1833 in Monterey to be as good as it is. In the first place, well, it’s in Monterey, a lovely town that is swamped by short-term tourists – the kinds of diners who will eat at a restaurant once and never go back again.

  11. Chez Panisse rebuilds after fire, to reopen on summer solstice

Chez Panisse in Berkeley is set to reopen June 21, more than three months after a fire destroyed much of the electrical systems and plumbing of the 42-year-old restaurant. It isn’t the first time the famous Berkeley restaurant has burned. Thirty years before, almost the entire place was destroyed in an electrical fire. This one wasn’t nearly as severe, but it’s taken time to rebuild the front porch and facade lost when a fire broke out in the middle of the night on March 8.
