In the U.S., most taverns are forbidden from selling alcoholic beverages to go and many have no smoking policies. Nightclubs became popular in the 1920s when people would go to see their favorite performers in an intimate setting. Dance clubs, featuring lighting and special effects, did not become popular until the disco craze in the 1970s. Most bars and clubs are open until early morning hours. « Show less

  11. Glenn Frey changes the tempo

The grin on Glenn Frey's face was clearly a satisfied one, but there was something else there too, something tugging at the corners of his mouth — it was a trickster smile of a man hatching a plot or enjoying the subversive tang of a still-private punch line.

Frappy, funky Hollywood, where locals like us seldom go unless the in-laws are in from Buffalo and want to bop around town in hopes of spotting one of the Gabors, or maybe even that pistol Kelly Ripa. Visitors from B-list cities always seem to prefer the B-list celebs.

  23. On the Spot: The welcome mat's out to foreign workers in London

Question: My wife and I recently returned from a nine-day trip to London, and we noticed that all the hotel staff was from non-British European countries and a few from countries in Africa. We also noticed that all the staff at the restaurants and some of the staff at the pubs where we ate and enjoyed their ales were from other European countries. Is this because these are jobs British workers do not want to do, or are there other reasons for this?
