11. A blissful Easter brunch

Come this way, up the garden steps and into a backyard where the patio is canopied by an old avocado tree. Take a seat in the mild yellow light of the resurgent sun, and fill a plate from a buffet of brunch dishes as spring-like as they are appetizing and fresh. Nibble a leek pancake wrapped around a crisp spear of asparagus, sip an herbal tisane, indulge in a chocolate-orange scone. Let the textures and aromas play over your senses -- here a creamy mouthful, there a vibrant touch of spice -- like flowers in a bouquet. Relax, and celebrate spring. For a few blissful hours, you have nothing else to do and nowhere else you'd rather be.

13. Restaurant breakfasts make a comeback in L.A.

WHEN Campanile stopped serving daily breakfast a decade ago, the regulars (but obviously not enough of them) who'd made a cappuccino and pastry or poached eggs and ham at the restaurant part of their morning routine were devastated. They had become accustomed to using the white tablecloth restaurant as an office away from the office. Over a sumptuous breakfast, they would meet clients, hold meetings, plot goals and projects. Screenwriters scribbled, actors pored over scripts and there may already have been a few bloggers at their keyboards. And then it ended (except for weekend brunch, which is still going strong).

15. Insider's tour of Marin, on two wheels

Special to The Times
WAITING for my latte at Tiburon's Cafe Acri, I was surrounded by a dozen men in powder-blue spandex. Their legs were closely shaved, and they walked in the slightly bowlegged way one does when there's too much padding in your shorts. In hearty voices,...

17. San Francisco's Hayes Valley, epitome of cool

Special to The Times
San Francisco — MY San Francisco neighborhood is not cool. It is sunny and cheap, but living there conveys zero hipness. So whenever I want to feel cooler than I really am, I give myself a weekend in Hayes Valley, the trendy neighborhood that sprang...

21. Nothing tastes better than a bargain

Save money -- eat out.
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
Save money -- eat out. It might sound counterintuitive, and it flies in the face of advice tossed out by penny-pinching "experts" -- but they don't know what we know: where to find the best dining deals in town. Who says it's cheaper to eat in? We...

23. Come for brunch. Bring billions.

The Internet bubble of the late 1990s ended with a painful pop. When today's young entrepreneurs get together, the only bubbles they see are in their mimosas.
