5. It's worth stopping along California 99

Call it the accidental road trip. Looking for a less monotonous route home from Northern California last summer, my family and I took California 99 south from Sacramento to Bakersfield and picked up Interstate 5 from there. It took a little longer, but the four-lane road's calming landscape and quirky attractions left us pleasantly surprised and prolonged our vacation buzz.

7. Restaurant review: The Strand House in Manhattan Beach

The Strand House in Manhattan Beach commands an enviable position at the edge of the ocean-side town overlooking the pier. No accident, since owner Michael Zislis is already a big presence here with his Shade Hotel and a number of casual restaurants, including Mucho, Brewco and Rock 'n Fish.

15. Lemons, twisted

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade, or so the adage goes. The clever tippler knows to take that pragmatic advice one step further: Give those lemons a twist — be it a clever garnish, an unexpected flavor pairing or, even, a bright shot of alcohol. Try these festive drinks and life will seem a whole lot easier pretty quickly.

19. Must menu choices be so difficult?

A year or so ago, not long before chef Ryan McCaskey opened Acadia in the South Loop, he began thinking about what his soon-to-be restaurant might serve at brunch. A lifelong Deadhead, he was traveling around the country, following what remains of the Grateful Dead, eating far more breakfasts and brunches than he typically does as a workaday Chicago chef: "I guess I had never thought much about how regional breakfast can be — how in the South, you'll find lots of sweets, biscuits in the morning, then in San Francisco, things get ultra-handmade and inventive, lots of pastries. I ate this blueberry muffin that probably weighed like 2 pounds."

23. Foraging for taste of the city

Foraging, I said to the couple across from me. It's kind of the thing here.
Foraging, I said to the couple across from me. It's kind of the thing here. Blank stares. Foraging, it's kind of the thing that the chef, Iliana Regan, that young soft-spoken woman in kitchen whites with her arms covered in tattoos who just served...
