1. [Chef Change] The Review: Red O

Pull up in front of the new Red O on Melrose and, before deigning to take your car, a valet in an embroidered guayabera and natty straw hat will lean into the window to ask, politely, if you've got a reservation. It's Mozza all over again. No reservation, no getting in. And on weekend nights, you'll need to reserve a month out. Even on the weekdays, it's the 6:30 or 9:30 routine. Try to get into the bar and the big guy posted outside the door, leaning on a lectern to make him look less like a bouncer, will nix that too. The bar is for patrons waiting for tables.

  9. 30 dishes to eat while visiting Chicago

You've already waited in line for popcorn at Garrett. You've endured verbal abuse at The Wieners Circle. And you've devoured the Chicago classic that is the Italian beef sandwich (Al's #1 and Johnnie's being the best, depending on who you ask).

  13. Mexican eats for under $10

In keeping with this column's name, I set off on a challenge: Can I walk into a restaurant with a $10 bill and walk out satiated? Turns out the probability of success increases when I focus on Mexican restaurants.

  19. Lady Gaga sightings in Chicago -- lots of restaurant visits but, curiously, not a lot of clubs

What do Chicago restaurants Spiaggia, Table Fifty-Two, Girl and the Goat and Topolobampo have in common? They all feature former “Top Chef” and “Top Chef Masters” contestants in their kitchens. And, not coincidentally, they’ve all been visited by Lady Gaga this year.

  23. From Bayless in 'Cascabel' to Achatz at Next, all the tables a stage

Most Chicago actors do not bring their own Bunsen burners to the rehearsal room. But then, Rick Bayless — the creator of the phenomenally popular Chicago restaurants Topolobampo and Frontera Grill and a chef who embraced celebrity long before it became de rigueur for anyone in whites — is no ordinary actor.
