1. Ruth Reichl on Conde Nast, Gourmet Live and online reviews

Ruth Reichl has always been fearless, as a restaurant critic, as a boss and as a friend. She'll tell you exactly what she thinks, good and bad. In an interview this weekend with the fashion website Daily Front Row, it's good to see nothing has changed. Writer Alexandra Ilyashov got the former L.A. Times and New York Times restaurant critic and former Gourmet magazine editor-in-chief to open up over lunch at Barbuto. Although, knowing Ruth, "getting her to open up" probably consisted of turning on the tape recorder and asking the right questions. Here are some highlights:

  3. Essay: A rookie Thanksgiving Day cook takes over the kitchen

It is Thanksgiving morning. As you read this, the bird, a fine 16-pounder, is coming to room temperature on the counter. The green beans have been topped and tailed, and my fingertips smart from peeling smoking-hot chestnuts for the stuffing. I've reminded my mother-in-law that she needn't bring the cranberry sauce — my cranberries are chilling in the refrigerator next to the bottles of Alsatian Riesling.

  5. A fresh take on the frittata: Master Class

It started out an ordinary enough morning. I was on vacation in London with Ruth Reichl and two other girlfriends, and naturally we'd planned our day around where we wanted to eat. For breakfast, we went to the Toe Path Cafe, an adorable little place I'd read about, and I did what I always do when I go out for breakfast: I scanned the menu for eggs. When I saw a frittata, I ordered it, having no idea that it was going to be nothing short of life-altering. Life-altering in terms of my egg-making and egg-eating life, anyway.

  7. Marion Cunningham dies at 90; icon of American cooking

Marion Cunningham's crusade to preserve the nightly supper hour came of her concern that without it children would never learn table manners or the give and take of dinner conversation. Not only that, she worried that such traditional American dishes as roast chicken, iceberg lettuce salad and strawberry shortcake would become endangered species.

  17. The taste-maker behind Joan's on Third

The crowd is shoulder to shoulder on a recent Friday at Joan's on Third. Power couples buy their toddlers "babyccinos" (steamed milk in demitasse cups sprinkled with cocoa), and lithe women with "it" bags dangle their forks over mounds of Chinese chicken salad. A voice over the loudspeaker interrupts the thrum: "If you are driving a white Jaguar parked in the back behind another car, please move your vehicle."
