1. 'It's exhausting to love a mango': New documentary 'The Fruit Hunters' makes mouths water

On Monday night a documentary called "The Fruit Hunters" premiered at the Laemmle Monica 4. The fascinating (and taste-tempting) film was directed by Yung Chang and features actor Bill Pullman, who has been cultivating a vertical orchard at his home in the Hollywood Hills for nearly 20 years.

  5. Bulgur: An ancient convenience food

When I lived in the Middle East, I learned that tender tabbouleh salad and crunchy fried kibbeh, the celebrated Levantine croquette, share a key ingredient: bulgur. Since ancient times, bulgur has been a staple in the Fertile Crescent, where it is popular today as pilaf and is used in a variety of other dishes, including stuffed vegetables, lentil entrees, meat stews and stuffings for poultry. In fact, the word "bulgur" comes from Turkish, and southeastern Turkey may be the area where wheat was first cultivated.

  13. Jonathan Gold | L.A. restaurant review: RivaBella makes ordinary Italian perfect

Angelini Osteria is almost everyone's favorite Italian restaurant in midtown: an informal room with well-designed trattoria cooking, a place to settle into for a plate of bombolotti or a Sunday saltimbocca, where whatever diet you happen to be on at the time will be accommodated without a fuss. Some nights, it feels as if everybody in the room knows one another, but you're in on the party too. You drink well, you eat well and you go home. A lot of chefs have come out of that kitchen, including Ori Menashe of Bestia.

  17. Hot and smoky clams, tri tip, a cocktail with a kick and even some Taco Bell

It can be argued that all foods get better when introduced to a little heat. And we're not just talking fire. A bagel isn't a bagel without a slice of smoked salmon, and a hunk of tri tip is elevated to another level after a couple hours in the smoker. Hit that meat with your favorite hot sauce and you've got a bite made in heaven. During Monday morning's #Weekendeats chat on Twitter, participants shared their hot and smoky bites. Here are the highlights:

  19. Can you top this? The case of the $100 hamburger

There is something about hamburgers that seems to inevitably lead to excess. And May being National Hamburger Month (wait, you hadn’t heard?), we’re seeing it in spades. The most recent exhibit is this $100 hamburger from an Atlantic City casino.

  21. Dodgers' Hanley Ramirez eats up rehab stint

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes are going to be sorry to see Hanley Ramirez leave. And with good reason, since the Dodgers minor league players ate well during Ramirez's two-game visit to the Cal League, with Ramirez springing for a postgame spread of steak and ribs both days.
