1. Easy dinner recipes: Diner-style hash and other one-dish meals

Sometimes nothing beats an easy one-dish meal. Especially if it comes together in an hour or less. Hash is a great option when you want something simple -- it's one-pan comfort food. Simply combine potatoes with the meat of your choice and flavor as desired. Voila. Check out these options:

3. Farmers Markets: In Lancaster, uncertified but top quality

At many Southern California certified farmers markets, the vendors may comply with agricultural regulations but still offer only mediocre produce and may never have actually set foot on a farm. Paradoxically, the Antelope Valley Winery farmers market in Lancaster is uncertified — not supervised by county or state agricultural authorities — but it's the best in its area, boasting really fresh produce, much of it organic, from nearby small farms. Flanked by trellised grapevines, it's small but picturesque, and much beloved by local customers and growers.

5. Setting Times stories to music: from Nick Cave to Dionne Warwick

By Kari Howard
By Kari Howard This week, I came across a website called Six Word Stories. The website, its creators say, was inspired by a bet from Ernest Hemingway’s pals that he couldn’t write a story in six words. So I thought I’d do six-word...

7. 10 things you should know about pie (it has to look messy to taste good)

Yesterday afternoon I served as a pie judge for an apple pie contest that was part of Amy Rowat’s undergraduate science-and-food class at UCLA, a bake-off that was equal parts cooking contest and science fair. Each team of contestants was charged not only with baking but with explaining the scientific principles behind its pie.

9. UCLA students dig into the physics of food

The three undergrads looked warily at the pulverized apples in their bowl.
The three undergrads looked warily at the pulverized apples in their bowl. The would-be pastry chefs had planned to drop dollops of the mixture into a chemical bath, creating fruity spheres with a filmy skin and an oozing interior. Their early...

13. Chained thinking on the federal deficit

Washington's tug of war over the federal budget has many wonders, but the biggest one of all must be the lengths to which politicians and pundits will go to deprive Granny and Grandpa of $30 a month.

15. A better way to track a bomber

The mayhem in Boston the week of April 15 was a reminder of how an American city can be paralyzed by a homemade bomb. The same kinds of improvised explosive devices that menaced U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan can easily be deployed by freelance terrorists or madmen trying to send a message, incite panic or just create a media spectacle.
