1. White wines to warm up your fall meals

The equinox is past, the shadows have lengthened, and apples, pears, winter greens and mushrooms are filling the markets. It's the time of year when you remember that you possess a working oven in which to roast birds and gratins and root vegetables. Dinner starts to fall into its cozier category, and your retinue of white wines will have to adjust to the season.

5. Rosh Hashana, Tunisian style

Alain Cohen holds out a gorgeous spiral-shaped loaf of challah, the color of cherry wood. On the top of the bread is a graceful open hand made of dough. Cohen and his baker, Yuri Amsellen, have been experimenting again. From the crowded kitchen of Cohen's Pico Boulevard takeout shop, Got Kosher? Provisions, comes the hypnotic smell of yeast.

11. A longtime vegetarian gets a high cholesterol count

My blood test results arrived in the mail last year -- and I was shocked. My report, with total cholesterol listed at 248, contained a handwritten note from my doctor in the margin: Come in to see me for medication.

17. The Review: Westside Tavern at Westside Pavilion is an unexpected delight

I can tell you my friends weren't all that excited when I told them where we were headed for dinner: the Westside Pavilion. Granted, dining in a shopping mall doesn't quite have the allure of Providence or the Bazaar by José Andres. But then again, I told them, you never know where the next great restaurant will pop up in Southern California. It could be in the most banal of strip malls, tucked away in Glendale or hiding out in the O.C. That's one of the peculiarities -- and delights -- of this endlessly fascinating area.

19. The experimental backyard: Blue and yellow tree trunks, a fence of living apple trees

Special to The Times
ENTER Ted Weiant's backyard and first you may be impressed by the mini-garden of roses, the cactuses, the tropicals. But look a little harder and the landscape takes a turn for the quirky. A pretty little fence seems to be growing apples. The trunk of a...

21. First look: '2012' explodes with $225 million worldwide box office. 'Christmas Carol' has strong second week. 'Precious' is powerful.

Company Town
Who will survive 2012?Apparently Sony Pictures -- and quite handsomely too. The 162-minute disaster epic, which got a love-hate reaction from critics (loved the special effects, hated the script), blew away the competition and took in $65 million in...

23. You can put a winning pie on your Thanksgiving table
