7. Jonathan Gold | L.A. restaurant review: RivaBella makes ordinary Italian perfect

Angelini Osteria is almost everyone's favorite Italian restaurant in midtown: an informal room with well-designed trattoria cooking, a place to settle into for a plate of bombolotti or a Sunday saltimbocca, where whatever diet you happen to be on at the time will be accommodated without a fuss. Some nights, it feels as if everybody in the room knows one another, but you're in on the party too. You drink well, you eat well and you go home. A lot of chefs have come out of that kitchen, including Ori Menashe of Bestia.

  17. Jonathan Gold | Restaurant review: On the M.A.K.E. for raw vegan cuisine

If you are the kind of diner who gets hung up on first impressions, M.A.K.E., Matthew Kenney's raw-vegan restaurant in Santa Monica Place, may not be for you. It is not just on the dining deck but actually in the mall's food court, so to get to it you have to pass by any number of gadget shops and cheese counters. Its open-walled design makes it difficult to figure out where the food court ends and the dining room begins.

  23. Spring can now begin -- Zuckerman's asparagus has arrived

Some folks mark the start of spring by the start of gloomy weather. Others say it begins at Easter or Passover. For me, spring officially begins when Zuckerman Farms brings its first load of jumbo asparagus to the local farmers markets.
