1. Twitter #Weekendeats: Crunchy, Thai papaya, and other sexy salads

Salads get a bad rap. Often the obligatory first course at a dinner, a plate of greens drenched in dressing is easy to overlook. But sometimes, if you get creative, a salad can be the real star of a meal or even a meal in itself.

  3. Restaurant recipes: Borscht from Paper or Plastik Cafe

Dear SOS: In the heat of August, I stopped for lunch at Paper or Plastik Cafe. I had the most amazing cold borscht. It was light and refreshing and full-flavored and, like my bubby's, only distilled down to the essence of borscht. Is there any chance you could get Paper or Plastik to share the recipe?

  5. Eight lucky cocktail specials for St. Patrick's Day

If you're donning the green on St. Patrick's Day and stepping out for a drink or two, then know that there's more to celebrating the holiday than downing green beer or straight Irish whiskey. Try honoring St. Patrick with a swank cocktail -- other than an Irish Car Bomb. Not that there's anything wrong with a shot of Jameson or a little Bailey's in one's Guinness (or is there?). But with all the shamrock-hued cocktails out there, you might as well try a jalapeño-tinged margarita, some rum muddled with fresh herbs, whiskey mixed with vermouths and bitters and mint syrup, or maybe green chartreuse with tropical juices.

  7. Where to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in L.A. area — no blarney

Mistakes are the portals of discovery. At least that's what James Joyce, one of Ireland's most famous writers — and a notorious drinker — once said. The phrase rings particularly true on St. Patrick's Day, the saucy Irish holiday that is marked by an epic consumption of alcohol and plenty of corned beef and cabbage. To honor Joyce, we make the annual mistake of drinking too much and discover that we wake up feeling green. Here are some of our favorite places to make those mistakes and many others this Sunday — framed by the back of a cab, of course.

  9. The ultimate St. Patrick's Day dining guide

Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, which happens to fall on a Sunday this year -- making everyone Irish all weekend long. 11. Las Vegas: Ri Ra pub to toast 2nd anniversary on St. Paddy's Day

An Irish pub that could rightfully claim the title of Las Vegas’ most authentic will celebrate its second anniversary on St. Patrick’s Day. Ri Ra, in the Shoppes at Mandalay Place, will mark the occasion with traditional Irish music as well as food and drink specials, the weekend of March 16 and 17.

  13. If kale is king, then collard greens are prince of the edible garden

Kale, the king of greens, has been losing plot real estate to a close relative, collards. With better resistance to heat, collard greens do just fine in Southern California. And the occasional winter cold snap? It only makes collard greens sweeter.

  15. Farmers Markets: The best of early winter

Although summer claims many of the sexiest, most attention-grabbing vegetables, such as eggplants, tomatoes, peppers and zucchini, in Southern California the vegetables that thrive in winter are equally abundant and alluring. Roots, crucifers and peas may be available year-round, but winter is their time to shine. In the spirit of the many award ceremonies held in this season, here are some of my favorite early winter vegetables and producers who do an extraordinary job with them, based on notes, photos and tastings over the last 14 years.

  17. Counter Intelligence: Tom Bergin's Tavern, reinvented

Have you been to Tom Bergin's Tavern lately? No — not Molly Malone's, the pub with the bands; the other one on Fairfax, a few blocks south, with the Irish coffee and the old Bing Crosby vibe. Bergin's has been a fascinating place since Brandon Boudet took it over last summer, partly because you're unsure whether you have fallen prey to an elaborate put-on or whether you really have stepped back into Raymond Chandler's L.A., whether the names of the paper shamrocks still stapled to the ceiling are of authentic provenance and whether the dinginess of the barroom is real.

  21. 50 places to eat for $5 or less

Dining out for $5 or less may seem like a fantasy, but Southern California has much to offer for those on a tight budget. For affordable Vietnamese fare, for example, venture to Garden Grove or Westminster. Or look to food trucks for unique, inexpensive eats. Even some pricier restaurants offer a selection of cheap eats during happy hours.
