1. McDonald's tests deep-fried chicken wings

McDonald’s customers love their chicken served small, in quick-delivery format such as McNuggets and McBites. Which may make their newest test -- deep-fried chicken wings -- such a no-brainer.

3. Post & Beam's well-seasoned restaurateur, Brad Johnson

Foodies tend to move like flocks of birds, swarming a chic eatery, and then — swoop — off to the next. One of their newer perches in Los Angeles is in a part of town that hasn't had much of the food spotlight. Post & Beam opened on New Year's Evein Baldwin Hills, an area with as many economic ups and downs as the hills and canyons that give the neighborhood its name. Restaurateur Brad Johnson has cut the ribbon on some flashy restaurants in his native New York and in Los Angeles; now his foray into L.A.'s best-known black middle-class neighborhood gives him food for thought.

5. Critic's Choice: Theme nights at Jar, Mozza Scuola and A.O.C.

When Campanile introduced grilled cheese night on Thursdays with then-co-owner Nancy Silverton at the panini press, those casual evenings perked up the dining scene. Sometimes it seemed as if all of L.A. would stop by for her variations on the grilled cheese theme and a festive, bargain-priced meal. And those Thursdays are still going strong.

7. Summertime dinners -- what could be simpler?

Daily Dish
It's summertime, and as the song should have said, the cooking is easy. How easy? This weekend we started with this dish of lemon cucumbers from our garden seasoned very simply and served with little bricks of fresh feta cheese.......

13. Critic's Choice: Sandwiches that are a slice above

Who wants to eat lunch inside on these perfect early summer days? A salad is too messy to eat from your lap unless you carry a cleaning kit with you. But a sandwich? That's why it was invented. You could pack your own peanut butter and jelly, but if you want a lesson in the art of sandwich making, try one at any of these three places. I could list a good many more worthy sandwiches — the tarragon chicken salad at Joan's on Third, the egg salad at Clementine, the duck confit báhn mi at Josie Next Door and the simple, perfect jambon beurre at Cookshop in Echo Park. But let's start with these three.

15. Wine of the Week: 2007 Chasseur Pinot Noir 'Sonoma Coast'

This Pinot Noir from cool climate Sonoma Coast is a marvel of fruit and finesse. Winemaker Bill Hunter is old school: No fining or filtering for his Chasseur Pinot. The 2007 unfolds like a flower in the glass, scented with cherries and raspberries with a whiff of earth. It's all silk in the mouth, medium-bodied and tasting, well, like new world Pinot Noir with a light veil of spice. Together, Hunter and the Sonoma Coast have produced an elegant Pinot, testament to this wild and beautiful place and its potential for grapes. Just 31 barrels made.

17. Wine of the Week: 2010 Villa San-Juliette 'Fat Monk' Pinot Noir

I don't know anything about the Fat Monk depicted on a bottom corner of the label hoisting a wine glass, halo hovering over his head. But I would like to second that halo for making a terrific everyday Pinot at an everyday price.
