3. Wine of the Week: 2010 Hirsch Vineyards 'The Bohan-Dillon' Pinot Noir

David Hirsch of Hirsch Vineyards has produced some renowned Pinot Noirs from his sprawling Sonoma Coast estate. They're very good. And very expensive. But the estate also makes a second label called "The Bohan-Dillon," which is much more affordable. About one-third of the fruit comes from Hirsch Vineyards, mostly younger vines, and the remainder from neighboring estates. The Bohan-Dillon is made exactly the same way as Hirsch Vineyards' higher-priced Pinots.

  5. Wine of the Week: 2007 Chasseur Pinot Noir 'Sonoma Coast'

This Pinot Noir from cool climate Sonoma Coast is a marvel of fruit and finesse. Winemaker Bill Hunter is old school: No fining or filtering for his Chasseur Pinot. The 2007 unfolds like a flower in the glass, scented with cherries and raspberries with a whiff of earth. It's all silk in the mouth, medium-bodied and tasting, well, like new world Pinot Noir with a light veil of spice. Together, Hunter and the Sonoma Coast have produced an elegant Pinot, testament to this wild and beautiful place and its potential for grapes. Just 31 barrels made.

  7. Critic's Choice: Barbecue in Los Angeles

You probably know your barbecue: Bludso's in Compton for meaty beef ribs; sliced brisket from Phillips in Leimert Park; maybe farmers market fixture Bigmista's platter of pulled pork, ribs, brisket and links. But here are a few lesser-known spots to add to your list, in case of goat-barbecue, Korean-Chinese-mutton-skewer or Argentinian-parrillada cravings.

  9. Critics' choice

If you're hungry for a little of Beijing and beyond — northern Chinese dumplings, buns and hand-pulled noodles or maybe even cumin-scented lamb kebabs in the style of Xinjiang's food stalls — look no further. Here's where to get your fix of Uighur saucy chicken piled on thick-cut flat noodles or Shandong beef roll, braised brisket wrapped in flaky, pastry-like griddled pancakes.

  13. Wine of the Week: 2009 Walter Hansel Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

From Hansel Family Vineyards comes this fine expression of Russian River Pinot. Round and silky, with a beautiful balance and taste of red plums and black cherries, the 2009 is a splurge, but worth it for a California Pinot of this quality.

  17. 2006 The Ojai Vineyard Syrah

Everything you want in a Central Coast Syrah -- ripe, beautiful fruit, wonderful balance and structure, flavors of dark, juicy berries, wild herbs and a touch of smoke. Adam Tolmach's 2006 Santa Barbara County Syrah is a stunner. One of the original Rhone Rangers, he's no newcomer to Syrah and has distilled everything he knows about the grape into his wine. A true artisanal winemaker, for the past few vintages, he's been blending the Syrah with a touch of Mourvèdre and Grenache to terrific effect.
