  1. Get outta here!

Memorial Day's behind us and the weather's finally starting to cooperate, which means we're ready for our favorite summer pasttime: alfresco dining and drinking. Whether you're seeking a stylish meal on a shady patio or a raucous beer garden night with...

  3. Art alongside food at Glass Grill in Baltimore

The brain works slowly in winter. There are dozens of beautiful art-glass pieces displayed behind the bar at the Glass Grill east of Highlandtown. There are two dazzling, enormous Dale Chihuly-inspired glass sculptures hanging from the Glass Grill's ceiling. If you ask your server about these sculptures, he'll tell you that the pieces were forged by Tim McFadden, and that you're welcome to stroll over with your beer to the adjacent glassworks, a converted garage, and watch him at work.

  5. Dining for $25 or less: Casey's

Casey's is a great little family restaurant, a real charmer, with a friendly and efficient staff and an accessible and affordable menu of pub fare and Italian-American specialties. Taken in from the road, where it lies just inside the Beltway, it doesn't look like much, just another county tavern. But it will take you about 10 seconds once inside the dining room to conclude two things: that the meal is going to turn out just fine and that everyone already eating there is a regular.

  7. Strength of Sanders' is its breakfast on the porch

No review of Sanders' Corner can start with anything but its fine covered porch overlooking the woods and fields surrounding Loch Raven Reservoir. Not for nothing do the servers wear T-shirts saying, "Sanders' Corner: That Dam Place." Decked out with striped awnings, tile-topped tables, potted plants and ceiling fans, it's one of Baltimore County's best spaces for eating casually outdoors.

  9. At Ketchup, it's so cute and comforting

Our waiter has ketchup splashed on her shirt. So do the other servers. More of it is dribbled across the glass panels dividing the sleek lounge from the dining room of this new Sunset Boulevard spot. It's not real, of course, just graphic arts sleight of hand. With a name like Ketchup, how could the designers of this, the latest entry from the ever-expanding, celebrity-backed Dolce Group (Dolce Enoteca, Geisha House, Bella, etc.) have resisted? They've lobbed tomato red all over the restaurant.

  11. A high-stakes enterprise

I've driven up La Cienega for months, wondering what was going on with the Lodge, the new steakhouse for the Atkins generation, slated to replace Temple, just north of Wilshire. I'd note the shaggy tree trunks in the window, the urban timber lodge look. It sure looked as if it were about to open any day now. But, permits and financing being what they are, that day didn't come until just over a week ago.

  13. Take a trip through time while enjoying good food

Dining at The Restaurant at the Station in Tamaqua is about much more than lunch or dinner. Along with good food, this restaurant — located in a reclaimed and renovated 19th century train station — has stories of history and community to tell anyone...

The Lodge, a trendy new steakhouse on La Cienega just above Wilshire, is the kind of place that almost demands a martini.

  17. Where classic is prime

There's not a Hummer in sight. No babes in flirty dresses. No phalanx of valets sprinting to get your car. No guy with a clipboard checking off names, so no need to summon your inner supermodel to bluster through the door on Jimmy Choos.

  19. Papermoon Diner

Before she passed away, my grandmother was a doll doctor. I guess you can make a career out of that. Anyway, when I was young we would visit, and there would be doll extremities all over the house. Little baby legs and arms and heads and even eyeballs would be strewn about like the Little People's Daycare just stormed Fallujah or something. That creeped me the freak out.

    Sun-Sentinel
We open the door to Cheeburger Cheeburger and a half-dozen, fresh-faced young women seem to stop what they're doing to greet us. It feels wonderfully old-fashioned and neighborly, and that's just what Cheeburger Cheeburger wanted to do when it opened...
