1. Maccheroni Republic breaks new ground downtown

It was almost 25 years ago that Jean Louis DeMori and Antonio Tomassi opened an unprepossessing little Italian restaurant on a strip of no-man’s land across from Cedars-Sinai Hospital. It was called Locanda Veneta and it kicked off the first round of terrific, small, very specific Italian restaurants in Southern California.

  3. From New York chef Sara Jenkins: New Italian Pantry app

I was excited to see that New York chef Sara Jenkins of Porsena and Porchetta has just come out with her own app called “New Italian Pantry.” It seems like such a natural subject and the publisher has produced a beautiful app with gorgeous photography and graphics. Too bad the content re the pantry is so sketchy. You do get some 80 recipes, though.

  9. Counter intelligence: Superba Snack Bar in Venice

If you were to invent a restaurant whose specialties include a cauliflower T-bone, you probably couldn't do any better than Superba Snack Bar. It occupies what looks like a corrugated shoe box sliced open at one end, a giant version of the dioramas you may have constructed for social studies in fourth grade. Superba is at the heart of its Rose Avenue neighborhood in a stretch of Venice Beach where the fixed-gear bicycles outnumber cars some afternoons and even the elderly seem acquainted with kombucha and Lululemon.

  13. Critic's Choice: Remedies for pasta cravings

Whenever Italian friends come to stay, I've noticed they can go at most three, maybe four days before they can't stand it anymore: They have to have some pasta. If that means cooking it at a campground or beside the road, so be it. This is comfort food at its most basic. And if there's nothing much in the cupboard, well then that's why aglio olio (garlic and olive oil) was invented. Or for that matter cacio e pepe (Pecorino Romano and lots of black pepper). Here are three places to get that pasta fix.
