1. Review: 'Cinderella's' many rewards

The romanticized image Los Angeles Opera is promoting for "Cinderella" shows a pretty princess, a pumpkin-shaped carriage and ample fairy dust. Opera, perhaps, for preteens?

  5. Culinary SOS: Bluewater Grill's chicken chopped salad with avocado dressing

Dear SOS: A visiting cousin from Georgia and I recently ate lunch at the Bluewater Grill in Redondo Beach, and she loved the avocado vinaigrette salad dressing — so much so that we returned for dinner the following day just so she could order it again. Any possibility that the Bluewater Grill would share its recipe for this salad dressing? It would make one Georgia Peach very happy.

  7. For experimentalists: Vom Fass' sampler sets of oils and vinegars

Tucked away in Westlake Village is a unique shop called Vom Fass. The name means “from the cask” in German and that’s what this German-based company, which has more than 250 locations in Germany and elsewhere, sells — exotic oils and vinegars directly from the cask. If you’re looking for pumpkin seed oil from a pumpkin soup or walnut oil for a salad, you can find that and much more at this Valley shop.

  9. Counter Intelligence: Tasty Dining in San Gabriel brings the heat of Wuhan

Let's say that a correspondent has asked if you have been to the new Wuhan restaurant in San Gabriel, and let's say that you answer him, to save face, with the Internet equivalent of a smile and a nod. It is easy enough to find this restaurant — a quick Google search turns up a Facebook page, a post on a friend's blog and a Chowhound post by your correspondent, the San Gabriel Valley spicy-food maven Jim Thurman, whom I suspect has been the first customer at more than one Rosemead dan dan mian establishment. It is easy enough to find the restaurant, Tasty Dining, which is in a strip mall you have been frequenting since the 1990s, in a space you remember as a boba parlor.

  17. A heady whiff of autumn in new perfumes

For perfume lovers, the advent of cooler weather may very well inspire a shift in scents. It's a time to abandon the light florals of summer and explore fragrances that reflect autumn and conjure notions of All Hallow's Eve.
