  7. Market Fresh: Strawberries

At last the strawberry fields seem to have shaken off the winter's cold. Now they are back to what they do best: pumping out berries like there's no tomorrow.

  9. Farmers Markets: Rhubarb worth stalking in early spring

Rhubarb is one of the great joys of spring, with its rosy color, earthy tang and old-fashioned allure, and the story of its local rise and fall is as intriguing as its flavor. Just a generation or two ago, it was widely cultivated in Southern California, but now local rhubarb is available almost exclusively at farmers markets, and just from a handful of vendors.

  11. Test Kitchen video tip: Blind- and par-baking a pie crust

Blind baking, or pre-baking a crust, is common when you are using a filling in the pie shell that does not need to be baked, or that bakes up quickly. Both flaky pie and short tart crusts need to be weighted before baking so the pastry doesn&rsquo;t puff&nbsp; on the bottom or slip on the sides.

  13. Kickstarter campaign brings a cookbook from Lark's John Sundstrom

I'm excited to have the new cookbook "<a href="https://larkseattle.com/lark-cooking-against-grain">Lark: Cooking Against the Grain</a>" (Community Supported Cookbooks, Seattle, Wash., $50) from&nbsp; chef/owner John Sundstrom in hand. <a href="http://larkseattle.com/">Lark</a> is one of my perennial Seattle favorites.&nbsp; Sundstrom's cooking is unfussy, yet sophisticated, with a deep sense of place. This is not one of those chef's vanity cookbooks that requires a forklift to move from bookshelf to kitchen counter. Reasonably sized, it's a very personal book from this beloved and much lauded Seattle restaurant.

  15. Farmers Markets: Irvine's Saturday farmers market is O.C.'s sweet spot

The Irvine Saturday farmers market is the largest and best in Orange County, but it's a mixed bag. It has some worthy local small farmers who come in person, along with more commercial farms, and even a few who have been sanctioned previously for cheating by agricultural authorities or other managers.

  19. Compartés' Jonathan Grahm -- the new face of chocolate?

Jonathan Grahm, the owner of Compart&eacute;s Chocolatier in Brentwood, is just back from a whirlwind pre-Valentine's Day tour of Japan, where 100 Compart&eacute;s pop-up shops opened for the holiday in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Hiroshima, Nagoya and Kobe. Grahm's face has been plastered on billboards, little old ladies in kimonos vied for his autograph, designers wanted his chocolates to coordinate with their products (underwear, for example) and fans showered him with gifts (such as a Mickey Mouse action figure).
