Mark your brand new 2012 calendar for July 11-15. Those are this year's dates for the Stellar Construction "Catch A Rising Star" Invitational at Cedar Beach, the first of the two major summer tournaments that make Allentown the place to be for high school hoops every summer. Chester is the defending Stellar champion.
Ron Krick, who led West Reading to three state titles and tallied 3,174 career points — the most in the state's history at the time — died on Dec. 26 at the age of 68.
Krick, a 1961 high school graduate, went on to play at the University of Cincinnati and with the Cincinnati Royals in the NBA, but his career was cut short by shoulder injuries.
In a Reading Eagle story, Dr. Richard Flannery, president of the Berks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, called Krick "a gentle giant."
"He was tough on court, but quiet off court,' Flannery said.
Krick, who averaged 32.4 points per game, still stands fourth on the state's all-time scoring list behind only A.J. Nastasi (3,833), Tom McMillian (3,608) and Billy Owens (3,299).
District 11's all-time leader remains Catasauqua's Larry Miller, who tallied 2,722 points before graduating in 1964.
Best of the week
Individual performance — Dieruff's Rasean Jenkins had 28 points in a Christmas tournament win over Northampton; Salisbury's Lloyd Irons had 31 against Tamaqua, and Lehighton's James Farano had 28 as the Indians got their first victory of the season, beating Palmerton.
Team performance — Emmaus, getting a balanced effort, beat Lower Merion on its home floor to win the Jameer Nelson Classic.
Coaching performance — Freedom's Joe Stellato has been pushing all of the right buttons so far this season, and he did it again to allow the Patriots to fight back from an eight-point deficit against Liberty on Tuesday. Junior guard Maceo Connor gave the team a big lift off the bench.
Memorable Quote — "I'm blessed that they gave me another chance," said Salisbury's Irons, who was granted another year of eligibility by the District 11 committee after going through a hearing late last summer. "I'm glad that they had the hearing and gave me this year. I'm in a good place."
