TALLAHASSEE -- While coach Jimbo Fisher was pleased with the physical nature of Florida State's goal-line work during Monday's scrimmage inside Doak Campbell Stadium, based on statistics from the practice, he clearly has reason to be encouraged about the battles between his defensive backs and receivers, too.
Ahead of the Seminoles' practice Wednesday afternoon -- their second-to-last before Saturday's spring game -- statistics from the the second simulated game of the spring were released.
Quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs were the statistical stars, while a trio of running backs piled up their own numbers during what was apparently one of the more grueling workouts of the spring.
"It was physical. It was nasty. It was the way you ought to play football on both sides of the ball," Fisher said moments after Monday's practice. "Goal-line was a bloodbath."
The scrimmage also included an aerial assault that was engineered by each of FSU's four quarterbacks. All are battling for the chance to replace former starting signal-caller EJ Manuel. A decision on the matter likely won't come until preseason camp.
As you take a look at the stats, remember, they came amid mixed groups of talent. There are backups who played with first-team players around them, and vice versa. While statistics are the end-all, be-all in determining the winners of the various position battles and depth-chart races, they do provide a roadmap to follow.
