No boomer in these Sooners. Since last playing in the 2008 BCS National Championship, Oklahoma has had its share of struggles against Big 12 foes going 18-9 including Saturday’s 24-19 loss to Kansas State.
It went from bad to worse in Fayetteville. Arkansas was a team loaded with talent and full of expectations, but with three straight losses the Razorbacks are in a freefall that could drop the Hogs out of bowl contention and cost John L. Smith his job.
What a difference a year makes. Notre Dame’s secret to its success is simple: cut down the turnovers. The Irish went from being at the bottom of the country in turnover margin last season to fifth in the nation this week thanks to a defense that forced five miscues from Michigan and Denard Robinson.
LSU has some problems. Anyone watching LSU’s 12-10 victory over Auburn could tell that this LSU squad doesn’t seem as dominate as in years past. I wasn’t the only one as voters in this week’s top 25 polls dropped LSU from second to third behind Oregon.
Don’t overlook the ‘Noles. While Florida State’s start against Clemson looked like so many past disappointments, the Seminoles rallied in the second half and put away the Tigers to give Jimbo Fisher his first signature win at FSU and make a huge statement in the national title race.
Beavers dam up run game. Oregon State is 2-0 against Top 25 teams this season thanks, in part, to a smothering run defense that held UCLA to 72 yards and the nation’s leading rusher, Johnathan Franklin to just 45 yards – 135 yards below his season average.
Trouble at Iowa. Kirk Ferentz’s run as the longest tenured coach in the Big Ten could be in jeopardy especially after losing to Central Michigan Saturday. It was the second non-conference loss of the season for the Hawkeyes who are now 5-4 against non-conference foes in the past two seasons.
Give it to the big boy. Boise State has been looking for answers for its struggling offense and it could have found the answer in 306-pound nose tackle Mike Atkinson whose 36-yard interception for a touchdown was the only points for the Broncos against BYU.
ULM earns moral victories. Louisiana-Monroe has to be the best 1-2 team in the country. The Warhawks upset Arkansas in week one of the season and played tough against Auburn and Baylor in subsequent games. It’s too bad moral victories don’t count in the standings.
