GAINESVILLE -- Jacoby Brissett started the season opener for the Florida Gators, taking the opening snap against Bowling Green Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
However, fellow sophomore quarterback Jeff Driskel was on the field at receiver for the first play. Driskel took over running the Gators' offense on the second snap and continued to play quarterback for the remainder of the opening series.
Kickoff was at 3:30 p.m. and the game is being broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Brissett and Driskel spent most of the offseason in a hotly contested quarterback competition. Florida coach Will Muchamp kept his promise, playing both sophomores during the Bowling Green game.
One quarterback was slated to play the first quarter, with the other getting the snaps in the second. Muschamp said at halftime the Gators' staff would decide who will lead the offense in the second half.
As a true freshman, Brissett started two games last season. He filled in for injured starter John Brantley. Brissett saw action in eight games and finished the season 18-of-39 for 206 yards and four touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions.
Driskel played in five games last season, completing 16-of-34 passes for 148 yards with two interceptions.
