With spring football clearly in the rear view mirror, college football turns its focus towards the long, hot summer. However, a quick check of the calendar shows us that we are only 123 days away from the first football game. Each day we will feature a different storyline to watch this upcoming season.

Five storylines to follow this upcoming season: Is Notre Dame truly back or was last season an anomaly?

The Buzz: After a decades-long  absence from the college football landscape, Notre Dame found itself back in the limelight and back in the national championship discussion. It was a discussion that the Fighting Irish have not been a part of since 1988. That was the last time Notre Dame stepped on the field to play for a national title, the program’s 11th. Since then, it’s been mostly mediocrity. That was until 2012 when Notre Dame went undefeated during the regular season while earning its first trip to a BCS national championship. Brian Kelly’s team did it with a solid defensive line that seemed to week-in-and-week-out find a way to win. The funny thing is, that by some accounts, Notre Dame was ahead of schedule. It was this year’s team (2013) that was supposed to be its best in recent memory. With 16 starters returning from last year’s team including quarterback Everett Golson and defensive tackle Louis Nix, this year’s squad could be even better than last years. That being said, the Irish should start the season as a top 25 squad heading into 2013.
