The season is kicking in now with some indoor/outdoor events that will occur monthly until our cooler weather ends in April.
One such happening is the popular Culture & Cocktails series at the Maitland Art Center, which begins Friday, 6-9 p.m., with an exhibit by Josh Garrick. The Orlando photographer returned recently from a trip to Athens, Greece, where he was allowed to take photos inside the Parthenon and its nearby museum when they were closed to the public. He transforms his images of these ancient temples and artifacts into rather modern-looking art. Culture & Cocktails — the second Friday of each month through April — also has live music, food trucks, poetry readings and cocktails. Your $5 admission includes one drink ticket. Members enter free, and becoming a member will cost you $35. MAC is at 210 W. Packwood Ave.; call 407-539-2181 for details.
The big indoor/outdoor event this week is our monthly Third Thursdays Downtown Orlando art crawl. Venues can be found in Thornton Park (like Mother Falcon, 817 E. Washington St., 407-423-3060, featuring hip art and clothing) and around central downtown. The center of activity is always the CityArts Factory (29 S. Orange Ave., 407-648-7060), which is home to several galleries. This month's main exhibition is organized by Arts Hub Florida and highlights the work of street artists and some experimental pieces by a coterie of local talent. Two blocks away is the newly renovated Gallery at Avalon Island (39 S. Magnolia Ave., 407-317-8367). Stop by and see why paintings by Edson Campos and Kathleen Brodeur have won international awards and are collected around the world.
UCF studio tour
Be sure to check out Thursday's open studio tour at the UCF Center for Emerging Media in downtown Orlando. These studios push the limits of contemporary art through the use of traditional and electronic media. The studios and work of 19 MFA candidates will be on view 5:30-9 p.m., and some pieces are for sale. Buy before they're famous! The center is at 500 W. Livingston St.; call 407-235-3591 for details.
