Jacob Birdsong, of Ellicott City, earned a Bachelor of Arts in environmental students in May from Washington College. He is the son of Richard Birdsong and Joanne Jurkowski.

David Briggs, of Laurel, has been named to the dean's list for the spring 2011 semester at Widener University, in Chester, Pa.

Jack Droppa, of Ellicott City, earned a degree in history, with a minor in education studies, in May, from St. Lawrence University, in Canton, N.Y.

The following students earned a Master of Arts in teaching in June from St. Mary's College of Maryland:

Lindsay Myers, of Mount Airy, has been certified in the area of secondary English and completed a master's project titled, "Motivating the reluctant learner: A study in stimulating the classroom environment."

Christopher Rodkey, of Ellicott City, has been certified in the area of secondary social studies and completed a master's project titled, "In loco parentis: Reaffirming the role of teachers."

Cynthia Heiser, of Ellicott City, has been accepted into Kappa Delta Pi, the national education honor society at Salisbury University. She is a senior majoring elementary education and a 2007 graduate of Mount Hebron High School. Heiser is the daughter of Barbara and Michael Heiser.

Mihiri Silva, of Clarksville, earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science in May from Dickinson College, in Carlisle, Pa. She is the daughter of Priyanthi and Ajith Silva and a graduate of Reservoir High School.

The following students received awards at thespring honors program in May at Gettysburg College, in Gettysburg, Pa.:

Noor Oweis, of Ellicott City, received the Gettysburg College Senior Prize; and

Marci Zimmerman, of Ellicott City, received the Edwin and Leander M. Zimmeman Senior Prize.

Scott Scher, of Ellicott City, participated in Salisbury University's community service project, "The Big Event." He is a junior majoring in conflict analysis and dispute resolution, and a 2008 graduate of Centennial High School. Scher is the son of Gary and Barbara Scher.

Cathleen Reid, of Ellicott City, has been named to the dean's list for the spring 2011 semester at Bethany College, in Bethany, W.Va.

Vincent Gutierrez, of Elkridge, has been accepted into Phi Kappa Phi, the international honor society at Salisbury University. Gutierrez is a junior majoring in exercise science. He is the son of Martin and Cynthia Gutierrez and a 2008 graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School.

Michael Casper, of Mount Airy, has been named to the dean's list for the spring 2011 semester at Penn State Erie, in Erie, Pa. He is studying software engineering.
