District 10 VFW Ladies Auxiliary met for their quarterly dinner meeting April 2 at the VFW Post 8185, Port Deposit. Auxiliary units from Elkton, Chesapeake City, and North East joined the auxiliary unit from Post 8185 to make plans for June's convention.
District President Dee Russo gave out awards from National Headquarters including a certificate to Post 8185 for participation in the President's Special Project. Election and installation of officers for 2013 followed the business meeting. Several Post 8185 members were called upon to serve the VFW at the District level including Kathy Heaton, Patricia Job, Anne Gibson, and Ruth Turner.
The officers and members of the Port Deposit Heritage Corporation met April 3 in the Paw Paw Building. It was announced that the annual General Meeting will be held April 25 at 7 p.m. in the Carriage House at 80 S. Main Street. Guest speaker will be "Dr. Beames," who will discuss Francis Scott Key, the penning of the Star Spangled Banner, Fort McHenry, and the War of 1812. Former Paw Paw Museum Curator Erika Quesenbery Sturgill will introduce Dr. Beames and will connect his War of 1812 stories with Port Deposit. Dues for heritage members of $10 are due and payable at the annual General Meeting. The public is also invited; punch and cookies will be served following the program.
The new Bainbridge Museum did not open for the season on April 6 at 6 S. Main Street (the Bank Building) due to unforeseen delays, as advised by Museum Association secretary Carolyn Spencer; but it is expected to open on Saturday, April 20, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Marianne Farmer Bitner enjoyed birthday greetings on April 8, while Cindy Barton Wallace celebrated her birthday on April 9.
This year's play at Perryville High School is "Oklahoma," which opened Thursday, April 11 and will be presented on Friday, April 12 and on Saturday, April 13 at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium.
Sharon Jenkins celebrated her big day on April 11 and Norma Corsey Sarason subtracted a year from her age on April 12.
The first Chicken Bar-B-Que of the season, sponsored by the Water Witch Fire Company, will be held on Saturday, April 13 from 1 to 5 p.m. at House 2, Woodlawn Station.
Harmony Lodge, on Jacob Tome Highway between Port Deposit and Rising Sun, will sponsor a monthly breakfast, open to the public, on April 13 from 7 to 10 a.m.
The Port Deposit VFW Post 8185 will sponsor a spring car show on Saturdaynfrom 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 70 registrants. The post is at 520 Susquehanna River Road. Refreshments, door prizes, a DJ, and a 50/50 raffle will be featured. Call 410-642-2847 for information, directions, or pre-registrations. All proceeds benefit our veterans.
A fashion show and luncheon will be held on Sunday, April 14, at the VFW Post 10146, at 3440 Conowingo Road, Street. The admission is $10 per person, and show starts at 1 p.m.; the event is sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 10146.
Lower Susquehanna Greenway will hold its 13th annual River Sweep on Saturday, April 20, this year in honor of Earth Day. This volunteer river shore clean-up will take place in Port Deposit, Perryville and Havre de Grace. Register at 8:30 a.m. with the clean-up from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will be held rain or shine. Port Deposit's two clean-up sites are Marina Park and Octoraro Creek. Register in advance at http://www.hitourtrails.com.
The men and women of Water Witch Fire Company will gather for their annual awards Banquet on Saturday, April 20, at 5 p.m. at the VFW Post 8185. All members must R.S.V.P. to Wayne Tome as soon as possible to guarantee a seat at the banquet.
A special service will be held at the Port Deposit Presbyterian Church on April 21 at 10 a.m. During the regular service that day, the congregation will be entertained and enlightened by "Silent Witness," a mime troupe from Mt. Zion UMC in Bel Air. Thanks for the "head's up," Roxanne.
