The East Jordan High School quiz bowl team walked away with a first place trophy Wednesday after bettering much larger schools from across the state.
The Central Michigan University Quiz Central tournament drew in fierce competition for a bracket-style face-off in categories such as geography, history, math, science and pop culture.
The team of four East Jordan students -- three seniors and a junior -- defeated their opponent first in a competition against other Class D schools, then in the semifinal against a Class C school and, finally, in the final against Class A-rated Midland High School. East Jordan did not lose any of its games.
The students practice once a week for one and a half hours at a time during the school year. The practices help, said team coach Devin Brown, but his kids are naturals.
"There are certain topics these kids know a lot about," he said, "They come to these events bringing a whole lot to the table already."
Three of the team members were awarded $2,500 scholarships to Central Michigan University for winning the division competition.
A trophy was the prize for winning the final.
"A trophy and bragging rights," said Brown.
Competing team members include Tyler Hines, Donny Miller, Rachel Harden and Joel Liesenberg. Other team members include James Radtke, Katie Capelin, Destiny Honeysette, Jacqueline Radtke an Jordan Liesenberg.
