Maryland's congressional delegation will have unusual influence in helping to resolve big issues left hanging on Capitol Hill, because two of the state's lawmakers were appointed Friday to help sort out differences between House and Senate legislation.

  3. Casey, Schwartz named to payroll tax committee

Ending weeks of partisan gridlock -- the norm these days for Capitol Hill -- House Republicans agreed Thursday to a two-month extension of a tax cut for working Americans with the stipulation that Senate Democrats agree to appoint conferees to negotiate how to pay for the tax cuts for the rest of the 2012 year. So far, just Democrats have made their selections. Among the chosen, are Pennsylvania Democrat U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and Philadelphia suburbs U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz.

  11. Some Marylanders question odd pairings in proposed new congressional map

  17. Keeping Congress clean

In September 2008, the U.S. financial system was teetering on collapse and the stock market was shaky. But Alabama Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus saw opportunity in the crisis. According to an investigation by the CBS news program "60 Minutes," Mr. Bachus attended a closed-door meeting that month with then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke at which lawmakers were briefed on the probable course of events. A day later, Mr. Bachus bought two types of highly leveraged options, essentially betting that share prices would fall — which they did. A week later, the congressman pocketed a tidy $5,000 profit when he sold his options.

  19. O'Malley DGA fundraising: The appearance of conflict

Perhaps it is a pure coincidence that Energy Answers International cut a $100,000 check to the Martin O'Malley-led Democratic Governors Association on the very same day that Governor O'Malley indicated he would sign state legislation that could be worth millions to the company. Perhaps it is also coincidental that Exelon Corp.'s support for the DGA increased tenfold at the same time that the Chicago energy firm was seeking Maryland regulators' approval for its merger with Constellation Energy Group. Or that wind energy companies that stand to benefit from Governor O'Malley's support for their industry started giving more to the group after he took charge, or that a company looking for state approval to build a new natural gas power plant in Southern Maryland gave its first major donation to the DGA this year. Maybe it's all a big coincidence, as Governor O'Malley insists — but it sure looks bad.

  23. Wrong cure, wrong problem
