1. Lawmakers ask who knew what about bomb suspect

BOSTON (AP) — Lawmakers are asking tough questions about how the government tracked suspected Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev when he traveled to Russia last year, renewing criticism from after the Sept. 11 attacks that failure to share intelligence may have contributed to last week's deadly assault.

  13. The truth about torture

If there were any remaining doubts that what the CIA did to captured terrorist suspects in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks was torture, a report last week by an independent investigative panel should put them to rest. According to the report by the Constitution Project, an independent legal research and advocacy group in Washington, not only did the Bush administration indisputably engage in torturing prisoners to extract information, a practice banned by both U.S. and international law, but the nation's highest officials knew about the abuses and condoned them. Ultimately, that weakened rather than strengthened U.S. security and damaged our standing in the world, the panel concluded.

  19. Obama: Unclear who is responsible for explosions

WASHINGTON (AP) — A stony-faced President Barack Obama declared that those responsible for the explosions at the Boston Marathon "will feel the full weight of justice," but he urged a nervous nation not to jump to conclusions. 21. Moving up the CIA ladder

CIA Director John Brennan is reportedly considering promoting an official who ran an overseas "black site" where suspected terrorists were interrogated and who was involved in the decision to destroy videotapes of waterboarding. It's an outrageous idea. Installing that official as head of the agency's National Clandestine Service would undermine the Obama administration's insistence that it has repudiated the abuses of the George W. Bush administration's war on terror.
