First elected in 2001 and re-elected to his third term in 2007, Eddie Alberto Perez is Hartford's first Latino mayor and its first strong mayor under a revised city charter adopted in 2002. Born in Corozal, Puerto Rico, in 1957, Perez moved to Hartford in 1969. Perez became a VISTA volunteer in 1978, addressing tenant issues in the city's North End. He later became a founding member of the grassroots organization O.N.E./C.H.A.N.E. then joined Trinity College as its first director of community relations. He earned a degree in economics while working there and was named associate vice president of community and government relations. Born in Corozal, Puerto Rico, in 1957, Perez moved to Hartford in 1969. Perez became a VISTA volunteer in 1978, addressing tenant issues in the city's North End. He later became a founding member of the grassroots organization O.N.E./C.H.A.N.E. then joined Trinity College as its first director of community relations. He earned a degree in economics while working there and was named associate vice president of community and government relations. He went on to lead the completion of the $112 million Learning Corridor project near Trinity and to head the South-side Institutions Neighborhood Association. Perez won by landslide margins on his first race, advocating administrative reform, educational improvement, and housing development. He and his wife, Maria, have two children.  « Show less
