  1. Istanbul protesters fear what a new day will bring

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- It’s dawn and tea pots bubble above low flames. Faces appear, poking out from tents, with reddened eyes. The first cigarettes of the day are lit, their tips glowing orange. Smartphones glow as people line up in an exhausted haze, waiting for a breakfast of coffee, bread and cheese.

  7. South Africa's path to marriage equality

I can't say, of course, how the U.S. Supreme Court will rule on the same-sex marriage cases before it. As a justice on the Constitutional Court at the time, I was asked to write the judgment in that case, which led to South Africa's becoming the fifth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.
