With 50 percent of the vote, Madigan narrowly beat Republican Joe Birkett, 47 percent, in 2002; in her re-election bid in 2006, Madigan captured 72 percent of the vote. Madigan has frequently butted heads with the legal team for Gov. Rod Blagojevich on various issues, including public disclosure. Many have speculated Madigan has her eyes on the governor's office.
