Sen. Mel Martinez (Melquiades Martinez), R-Fla., was plucked from relative obscurity as Orange County's chairman to become the nation's secretary of Housing and Urban Development in 2001. President George W. Bush tapped family friend Martinez partly inspired by his life story. Born in Cuba (Oct. 23, 1946), Martinez came to the U.S. as a teenager as part of Operation Pedro Pan, a Catholic Church airlift of children out of the communist country.
